DevOps: a culture journey

DevOps: a culture journey

This week I’ve had the pleasure of running a session at the DevOps focus group in London entitled “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”.

I want to thank all the attendees, as I had fun having an energetic conversation about DevOps. It’s an interesting topic that touches the entire organisation and it dosen’t matter if you are a C-level manager, a developer or an ops guy, everyone feels the same.

Culture change is challenging and frustrating.

DevOps implementations are not as easy as many try to “sell”. This time it’s not the new shiny devops tool we are talking about, but something scary and quite overwhelming if not “managed with care”.

Time to be more positive now!!! DevOps is fun. It gives us the opportunity to actually make better what we’ve been moaning about our entire lives.

In Italy there is a saying,

Keep close friends and family, keep closer your enemy!

And we all know who the enemy is here. Right?

You’ll find listed here few take-aways from that session that can be stuck on the side of your monitor and shared with your colleagues.

Installing Docker 1.12

Docker can be considered a growing container technology. Behind it there is what I consider one of the most innovative company of the century ( Docker Inc ) and an amazing community improving and mantaining this interesting technology.

As I wanted to try out the new features introduced by the latest version of docker platform, I thought to write down few notes as memorandum. My playgroung is an Ubuntu Server 16.04 machine on Azure and the docker engine.

Let’s copy and paste few information from the Docker official documentation to start with and set the scene.

Docker is supported on the following Ubuntu operating system versions:

  • Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 [LTS]
  • Ubuntu Wily 15.10
  • Ubuntu Trusty 14.04 [LTS]
  • Ubuntu Precise 12.04 [LTS]

Note from the official documentation: Ubuntu Utopic 14.10 and 15.04 exist in Docker’s APT repository but no longer officially supported.

Just gone live

Just gone live

Midnight. Friday night. I’ve just gone live with my new project. I’ve spent the last few years working with interesting technologies in the DevOps world - let’s call it DevOps movement - and I need a place where I can write my notes, write down what I learn trying new and old technologies out. I hate paper. You can’t search for anything on it. Useless.

Please don’t get frustrated if you can’t read anything in the next couple of weeks, I am working on organizing the first Enterprise DevOps meetup in London and the spare time I have is limited. If on the 14th of September you want to come and see what kind of community we are trying to build, join the group following this and RSVP.

If you have any questions or you want to know details of the event, get in touch with me using the social links on the side of page.

I am looking forward to seeing you there. Come and say hi.

Gianluca
